    Interesting facts: won Best Theme award in 1997.
    In the spirit of America, Moby Dick pays tribute to our heritage and forefathers. Included are the Liberty Bell, American Eagle, Uncle Sam, Honest Abe, Betsy Ross, George Washington, Juan Cabrillo, Martin Luther King Jr., our pilgrims from the Mayflower, a Native American Indian and, standing high above them all, the symbol of our freedom: The Statue of Liberty, highlighted by fireworks. However, the American Heritage would not be complete without a representative of our armed forces and Jolly old St. Nick.

    Interesting Facts: won Best of Yacht Club last year (1998). Cruising liveaboard boat recently returned from Canadian waters, boat built by owner and launched last year.

    Interesting Facts: Club founded in May 1999, already has over 100 members. Non-profit club that enjoys all types of kayaking: touring, whitewater, surfing, kayak polo, even snow-kayaking. Club is involved with many different community activities. First time in parade of lights!

Parade of Lights Awards

Boats will be judged on originality and the creative use of decorations depicting the parade theme. Boats are judged in four categories with scores ranging from 1 to 5 for each category. The categories and their criteria are:
  • Holiday Lighting
    • Amount of Lighting
    • Creative use of Lighting
    • Difficulty of Lighting (i.e., small boat with incredible lighting effects)
  • Music
    • Audibility
    • Live or Recorded
    • Applicable to the parade theme Spirit of America or a Christmas Theme
  • Special Effects
    • Crowd Engagement
    • Dressed in costume/boaters participation
    • use of ornamentation other than lighting
  • Originality
    • More than just lighting
    • Adaptation and variation of theme

JUDGING:

  • There are two groups of judges.

First Set of Judges:

December 5th: On board the USN vessel USS Essex at the Cruise Ship Terminal.

December 12th: On board the Maritime Museum's ferry boat Berkeley.

Second Set of Judges:

On board Aircraft Carrier USS John C. Stennis moored near the Carrier Turnaround Basin on North Island.

  • You must be judged by both groups of judges to be eligible for an award.
  • You do not have to enter both parades to be eligible to win an award.
  • Boats will lose points if parade route not followed (no water donuts, etc.)
  • Boats that enter both nights will receive a bonus point.

Flag Parade Awards

Award categories for the Flag Parade are:
  • Best of Theme - Most applicable to Spirit of America
    Destiny

  • Best Dressed Ship - Proper use of Regatta Flags (Ship Signal Flags) in proper sequence as referred to in Chapman's Nautical Guide and Boating Etiquette
    Steamship Medea
    San Diego Maritine Museum

  • Most Original - Best use of daytime decorations; imaginative and fun.
    Dauntless
